Long ago the cat goddess Nekono gave birth to two beautiful kits. The daughter was named Chiyo for she would be blessed with thousand of generations of cats to come. The son was named Takeshi for he was a fierce and violent warrior who held great power. Both were as opposite as night and day, dark and light.
Chiyo wasn’t physically strong, but instead had strong ki, chakra within her, and was able to use different jutsus. The opposite was for Takeshi; he had immense physical power, but had hardly any chakra and was unable to use any of the jutsus. Some say it was because he was born without a tail. The Goddess didn’t care though for which kit had power or ki, she loved them both equally. But as they grew older Takeshi started to envy his sister, a seed of hatred sprouting within his heart. He defeated countless foes, dragons, inugamis, amemasus, basans, ikuchis, taking a token from each one and brought them back to please his mother.
Nekono accepted each one of them gratefully, proud that her son was able to defeat so many foes. But the goddess cared little for the bloodshed and violence. Chiyo was in awe at her brother’s bravery and strength, looking up to him like he was the sun. Determined to be as great as he was, she practiced day after day with her jutsus, in hopes of getting his approval. But he paid his sister little mind, his nurturing jealousy ever growing.
One day word reached Takeshi about a Red Fox named Wari that claimed to be undefeatable. Sure that his mother would favor him more by defeating such a strong opponent, the warrior set out to slay the fox. He was disappointed though with the battle, having easily won against Wari without even trying. As he was about to kill the lying fox, Wari said he would be able to grant Takeshi’s greatest desire in exchange for sparing his life.
Takeshi was skeptical about this, having kept his hatred for his sister hidden well from everyone else. He was taken aback though when the fox spoke of the envious feelings he felt for Chiyo and how he longed to be Nekono’s favorite child. The fox said all he would have to do is bring Chiyo to him and his brother’s cave, then go back to his mother with a special leaf. The fox explained that the leaf, once brewed, would erase the goddess’s memories of ever having Chiyo and that Takeshi would become her favorite.
The tom grew hopeful at the fox’s words and spared it's life. He warned Wari though, that if he was lying, not only would Takeshi kill him, but condemn all of his kin to the shadows of darkness. Wari insisted his words were true, and gave Takeshi a small black jewel. The fox told him that he needed to wait three nights and four days before presenting the brew to Nekono and that Takeshi needed to keep the jewel with him at all times, stating that it would prepare his body to accept the use and flow of chakra.
Nodding his head the warrior left for home, to hide both the jewel and the leaf until the time was right; little did he know that he was being tricked. Once Takeshi was gone, Wari called to his brother, Yami and told him to prepare for a feast for they would be gorging on an immense amount of chakra soon.
Three nights and four days later Takeshi walked to the cave where he was to meet Wari, having tricked the innocent Chiyo into coming with him on a walk. Once there Wari leaped out and started to attack the two cats, Takeshi quickly realizing the fox was acting. He played along and leaped to defend his sister, urging her to run into the cave. Terrified Chiyo did what she was told and fled into the cave. Once she was out of sight and earshot Takeshi ceased in his attacks, leaving to go to his mother who would now pay only attention to him. But as he walked further and further from the cave, a cold feeling started to spread through him. When he heard the pained, terrified cry of his sister ring through the air, he forgot about his envy, in its place a strong sense of protectiveness consumed him.
As he charged into the cave his paws became soaked in blood. Looming over Chiyo’s body stood not red foxes, but two gumiho, their tails waving around them like serpents as they fed off of his sister’s ki and blood.
Rage consumed him as he attacked the wicked beasts, lashing out with deadly claws. As the fight dragged on, he realized two things. One, his sister’s life was diminishing, and that the foxes were getting the upper hand. Stepping over his sister protectively Takeshi stood his ground in a desperate attempt to keep them away from Chiyo. With the last of her energy, Chiyo let all of her ki leak out, mingling with her blood and soak into the ground before her body dissolved. Realizing his sister was dead an agony like no other shot him through the heart. In grief and despair he attacked with a new found strength, blinding Wari in one eye while leaving grotesque gashes across Yami’s face. It was a brief advantage though for the cat was quickly overpowered once again. Just as his sister had done, Takeshi released all of his energy, condemning the foxes and all of their kin to the shadows.
It was a few days later that Nekono found out that her children were dead and with a heartbreaking wail she ran to the cave where the battle had taken place; where Chiyro’s body had been laid five colored stones, each containing one of the five elements. Off to the side where Takeshi fell remained his claws and fangs which glistened in the dim light. To consume with grief the goddess threw the remains down to Kakusa reta Sekai. Soon after cats were being born with the ability to use chakra; those who remained normal or held little chakra found Takeshi’s fangs and claws and melted them down to forge the five sacred samurai swords. After many generations the cats divided into four clans, among those a village emerged with skilled weapon wielding cats who were most famous for their Samurai which is where begin our story.
The darkness is growing restless and change is going to take place in the near future. The sudden mysterious attacks happening at night by shadowed beasts have gotten the cats on high alert. With a looming evil approaching, will they be able to survive, or will they be consumed?
This is a quick summary about how the cats gained the use of chakra and a small glimpse of their history. Later on I'll start to upload the full version of the story one chapter at a time for those who are wanting a bit more.
